Ancient Pieties: Maps of Mexico 1995 - 1999
The photographs of Ancient Pieties: Maps of Mexico are grounded in my interest in the animal as a symbol of our human connection to the natural world and as a site encoded with spiritual and cultural meaning.
By means of multiple film exposure, I dematerialize the animal in order to suggest its spiritual nature, and then combine it with references to the earth, to religious sacrifice and to processes of metamorphosis and transformation. The resulting visual ambiguity speaks to the duality of life and death and the uncertainty that lies between. The images also impart a sense of dislocation, referencing the cultural complexities of contemporary Mexico and its spiritual ties to ancient Mesoamerican civilization.
